IS THE POPULARITY OF COMMERCIAL VIDEO STREAMING SERVICES AFFECTING THE MORE TRADITIONAL ENTERTAINMENT PLATFORMS?

The entertainment industry is continually striving to work in harmony with the progress of technology.

The number of people using commercial video streaming services has substantially grown in Great Britain, becoming the most popular medium for entertainment, official figures show.

The Office for National Statistics has indicated that almost half of adults say they have viewed Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Now TV or a similar online-based service in the most recent three months.

Watching video on demand from one of the big players in commercial streaming has risen to 46% in the last three months – up from 29% in 2016.

Other services which provide video streaming, such as YouTube, Facebook and similar platforms are also up 15% since 2016, meaning the overall figure of those watching this category make it stand at 62%.

Soon after, streaming music; internet banking and online shopping are the next most popular areas of the digital-age.

Arguably, the days of traditional theatre, 24-hour television channels and watching movies on a DVD are diminishing. However, these mediums do continue to remain popular and are a valued means of entertainment for millions, but, let’s face it, are steadily being overtaken.

So, what does this mean for entertainment? Will the traditional methods perish to pave the way for video streaming which is currently dominating headlines?

Perhaps not just yet.

With a growing number of people enjoying the results of paying for video streaming services, the popularity will inevitably continue to grow. Technology has a powerful influence on the lives we lead so it’s important we maximise the quality of all that we are consuming.

BBC iPlayer, which is paid for by the licence fee, saw 4.8 million requests for the first episode of natural history documentary Blue Planet.
